Wisconsin Court Reporters Volunteer At Special Olympics Event In Milwaukee
Wisconsin Court Reporters – Giving Back to the Community: Special Olympics
On July 14, the Greater Milwaukee Region 8 Special Olympics of Wisconsin held its annual District Softball, Tee Ball & Bocce Ball competition at Wick Field in Milwaukee. The competition has been continuing for over 25 years. This year, there were 12 tee ball teams, 19 softball teams, and 23 Bocce ball teams. The age range for the players is 8 years and older.
There were seven Brown & Jones employees signed up to volunteer for this event, Jane Jones, Lou Ann Hammes, Mari Lang, Laura Moore, Mary Ring, Peggy Mitchel, and myself. Once we arrived at Wick Field and got our shirts from the Volunteer Registration table, we were each assigned a shift assignment. We were thankful that most of the fields had trees covering the bleachers so that we were in the shade to help keep us cool.
Mari L. and Peggy were on reserve to fill in where needed, so they ended up going to the different fields to be cheerleaders for the players. Jane, Laura, and Lou Ann were assigned to be flippers/runners. They were in charge of flipping over the number once a team scored and to take the score cards to the standings table. Mary R. and I were scorers for the games, which wasn’t an easy job! You had to make sure you were paying attention. Jane and I ended up getting done early for the field we were assigned to, so we helped at the concession stand for a little while. We enjoyed seeing the players being proud of winning and holding up their ribbons to show their excitement.
There are many opportunities to volunteer for the Special Olympics. Below are some upcoming options for you to choose from: Bowling Competitions – October 14th, November 4th and December 1st. If you’re interested, check out the calendar at www.specialolympicswisconsin.org or contact Sidny Harker at (262) 241-7786 x 12.
